Euro Summer in Iceland: What to Pack (And What to Leave at Home)

By Daija Qualis | Guest Contributor | Shade & Travel

Euro summer in Iceland and not sure what to pack? We’ve got you. If you are dreaming of Iceland waterfalls, volcanic landscapes, cozy cafes, and soaking in hot springs without freezing your toes off, then summer (June through August) is the perfect time to visit. This Iceland summer packing list will make sure you show up prepared, warm, and stylish.

Iceland’s summer months are ideal for travelers who want to experience the beauty of the island without braving harsh winter conditions. With mild temperatures, long daylight hours, and endless photo ops, it is the best season to explore. And luckily for you, Shade & Travel guests thrived in July 2024 and brought back the ultimate Iceland travel guide to help you pack smarter, not harder.

Here is your comprehensive and easy-to-follow Iceland summer packing list—straight from the travelers who have done it.

The Must-Haves:

  • Fleece jacket

  • Sweaters / hoodies

  • Rainproof jacket and pants

  • Windbreaker

  • Thermal base layers / leggings

  • Waterproof hiking boots

  • Closed-toe shoes (comfortable!)

  • Warm socks + waterproof socks

  • Active friendly bathing suit (you will want to walk around the lagoon comfortably)

  • Shower cap and hair ties (keep your hair up – the minerals in the water will dry it out)

  • Winter coat (yes, even in summer—but skip the fur)

  • Gloves, scarves, and a beanie

  • Hat & sunglasses (for those surprisingly sunny moments)

  • Lightweight PJs (hotels are often toasty inside)

Travel Essentials:

  • Passport & boarding pass

  • Credit + debit cards (some spots are card-only!)

  • Euro plug adapters (Type C or F / “Northern Europe adapter”)

  • Portable charger and charging cables

  • Quick-dry towel

  • Reusable water bottle

  • Sleeping eye mask (remember almost 24-hour daylight!)

  • Lip balm & travel-size lotion (wind burn is real)

  • Hydration packets / electrolytes (for long hike days)

  • Protein bars & snacks (to toss in your day bag)

  • First aid kit (always a good idea)

  • Camera, tripod, and remote (for those solo shots at Skógafoss)

  • Waterproof phone sleeve

  • Fanny pack or secure crossbody bag

  • Backpack or small hiking daypack

  • Paracord & clothespins (to hang-dry wet gear)

Pro Tips from Shade & Travel Guests:

  • Pack more underwear than you think you will need. Trust.

  • Bring conditioner. Icelandic water is clean but can leave your hair feeling dry.

  • Avoid open-toe shoes entirely. Even if the sun’s out, the terrain is not flip-flop friendly.

  • Skip anything heavy or fur lined. Leave that drama at home.

  • Do not forget sunscreen. Even cloudy days can leave you burned.

Iceland is magic in the summer, but it is also rugged, windy, wet, and full of surprise adventures. Come prepared and you will thrive just like our Shade & Travel crew did in July 2024. Whether you are chasing waterfalls, climbing glaciers, or relaxing in geothermal pools, this Iceland packing list has your back. Use this Iceland summer packing list to make the most of your adventure without overpacking or missing the essentials.

See you in the land of fire and ice. Happy packing!
